At South Pacific Laundry, we utilise a variety of different technologies to increase our productivity while keeping costs down as much as possible. We continually strive to be up to date with the appropriate technology in order to maintain our 7-day operation, keep as small a carbon footprint as possible, and return your laundry to you as soon as we can. Some of the equipment we utilise includes items such as the ones below:

Continuous Batch Washer

An enormous drum-type washing machine, the continuous batch washer (or CBW, as we call it) is capable of washing large amounts of linen and feeding them to the industrial dryers after cleaning.

Industrial Dryers

Much more than your garden-variety dryer at home, our dryers stand over 3 metres tall and almost continuously dry linen 7 days a week, as it is fed to them from the CBW’s.

Automated folders and assembly lines

After being washed and dried, the linen is loaded into automated folding or ironing machines, and after processing it moves along belts such as you see in the pictures above, improving efficiency.

Automated Linen Bag Rails

The linen moves through the laundry in these suspended bags, which has the varied purpose of keeping labour costs down, freeing up considerable floor space and keeping your laundry clean and away from the floor. The bags will be remotely loaded into the washing machines and sorting areas where needed.

Automated Napkin Ironer

Napkins, sheets and so on are ironed and folded through large industrial machines which produce neat bundles of fresh, folded linen every time.

Sorting Bins with conveyor feed

When we receive linen to be washed, even this step is geared for efficiency. As you see in the above photo, each item to be washed is counted electronically and sorted by the type of item, for example, queen sheets and pillowcases.

South Pacific Laundry is committed to reducing its environmental footprint as much as possible. We have invested heavily in reducing water, gas and electricity usage across all our plants.

South Pacific Laundry recognises and is committed to supporting the Government’s vision of Corporate Social Responsibility in terms of their economic, social, and environmental impacts. In 2006, the company embarked on a project to support the implementation of a suite of sustainable technologies, which Sustainability Victoria believes resulted in the most resources smart laundry in the industry. All SPL plants are designed with environmental sustainability in mind whilst achieving the smallest carbon footprint possible.

South Pacific Laundry’s new facility has brought many environmental and economic benefits. We have set a new benchmark for other large industrial laundries as well as many other industries that use large amounts of processed hot water and/or discharge the water to sewers, such as hospitals, large hotels, small food processing plants and the food-manufacturing sector.

The technologies included:

  • Water recycling system, to save water and energy wastewater
  • Ecolab Energy Optimiser, to recover heat from the discharged hot water resulting in a reduction in drying time and less energy used per cycle.
  • Humidity sensors, reducing dryer gas usage by preventing over-drying.
  • Installed Boiler economiser, resulting in a 10% reduction in natural gas use for the primary boiler.
  • Installation of a new energy efficient variable speed drive rotary screw air compressor.
  • Reduction to electricity and gas maximum demand tariffs by modulating their demand

Water Recycling

SPL recovers our water through a recycling treatment system named the Kemco system in our largest plant in Melbourne and Blue Ocean systems in all other plants. Recycling our water saves hundreds of thousands of litres every year.

Kemco system

Discharged water will first pass through shaker screen and aqua hydrocyclone to remove suspended solids greater than 60 micron in size  such as lint, sand, and gravel from laundry waste. It also acts as pre-filtration before being put through Ceramic Microfiltration (CMF) and Reverse Osmosis (RO). This system is capable of recovering 85% of laundry wastewater at a rate of 18m3/second.

KEMCO - Ceramic Microfiltration System

The CMF filtration system is designed to deliver pre-filtered wastewater through ceramic filters which are able to filter wastewater constituents larger than 0.2 microns from the recycled water.

#For reference, the head of a pin is usually 2 millimetres in diameter (2000 Microns).

KEMCO - Reverse Osmosis System

Reverse Osmosis is the second stage of our filtration process. It is designed to further purify the water from the CMF by removing 98% of total dissolved solids, BOD, surfactants, reducing levels to laundry suitable cleaning water - no particles larger than .001 microns.

Blue Ocean Systems

Blue Ocean Systems are deployed in all the other SPL plants across Australia. Laundry wastewater is filtered through a single step disks filtration system. This disk filtration technology can deliver consistent depth filtration down to 115µm (Micrometres). It is capable of recovering up to 15m3 per hour, is fully automated and self-cleaning which is triggered by an integrated differential pressure sensor.

So you can be sure that when your linen returns from treatment at South Pacific Laundry, it is as clean as it can be!

Reduction of Gas usage

Boiler Economiser

SPL has installed economisers in their Melbourne plant as an efficiency measure to reduce gas consumption. The Economizer in the boiler works on the principle of heat transfer. Heat transfer usually takes place from high temperature to low temperature.

In the case of Boilers, flue gases or exhaust from the boiler outlet are at high temperatures and water that needs to be preheated is at low temperatures.

So, the temperature difference between water and flue gases helps to increase the feed water temperature.

Reduction of Electricity usage

SPL has invested in solar systems across 3 plants thus far and there are plans to implement across all the other plants.
